Objective: The aim of this study is to compare the Troponin-I levels before and after CPB in diabetic and nondiabetic coronary artery patients.
Methods: The data of 20 diabetic and 20 nondiabetic patients who had undergone CPB-guided cardiac surgery for coronary artery disease were retrospectively included in the study. Diabetic patients were determined as group 1 and nondiabetic as group 2. The data of the two groups were compared and evaluated.
Results: The descriptive data of the study groups were similar and there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05). There was a significant difference between preoperative and postoperative Troponin I levels of diabetic and nondiabetic patients (p<0.05).
Conclusion: In conclusion, preoperative and postoperative Troponin I levels increase after CPB in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients. However, this increase is higher in diabetic patients than in nondiabetic patients. We think that cardiac troponins may be predictors of the effect of CPB on the myocardium as well as the myocardial protection strategies (cardioplegia solutions, hypothermia, etc.) used during CPB.
